Manager Research, Development, and Innovation Department at NOSA
Dr Deonie Botha is responsible for managing the Research, Development, and Innovation Department at NOSA (Pty) Ltd. NOSA is a leading global solution provider within the occupational health and safety, and risk management industry. Deonie manages a research and development team responsible for developing new products and services, and improving existing processes within the field of occupational health, safety and environment as well as risk management. Her role entails research and development pertaining to, but not limited to, the mining, engineering, construction, and food and beverage industries.
Deonie has been exposed to managing research and development capabilities for various mining companies, hence, she has a broad knowledge of various technical aspects of the mining and mineral processing industry. She was responsible for business development at Tenova TAKRAF, Africa. Tenova Mining and Minerals is a worldwide supplier of advanced technologies, products, and engineering services for the iron and steel, and mining industries. The company is part of the global conglomerate of companies that forms the Techint Group. Tenova Mining and Minerals acquired Bateman Engineering and several other engineering companies prior to April 2013. Deonie assisted the Tenova Minerals business units (Pyromet, Tenova Bateman Technologies and Tenova Delkor) with market intelligence. In her role as a market intelligence specialist, she focussed on a diverse range of technical and market intelligence topics, relating specifically to mineral processing.
Prior to Tenova Mining and Minerals, Deonie was responsible for knowledge management and technology intelligence at Anglo American. In 2009, she was tasked with the responsibility of creating a knowledge management and technology intelligence capability for Anglo American. The capability has, as its core clients, the technical community (geology, mining, engineering, metallurgy, asset optimisation and project management) of Anglo American. She has interacted closely with the global mining and project management community of Anglo American. Furthermore, she was responsible for liaising with local (RIIS) and international stakeholders (NineSigma) to provide an open innovation service to Anglo American’s technical community. Deonie was also involved in initiating change management initiatives according to the Rapid Results Methodology. In addition, she was responsible for knowledge management, and market intelligence and research at Kumba Iron Ore, which is a subsidiary of Anglo American. During her career at Kumba Iron Ore, she developed an in-depth understanding of the commercial side of the mining and metals industry. She was instrumental in implementing a customer relationship management system and for liaising with Kumba’s customers in Europe, China and Japan. She has travelled extensively throughout Asia, Australia, Europe and South America.
Deonie has both practical experience and in-depth theoretical knowledge regarding knowledge management and competitive intelligence. She has lectured extensively on both these subject areas for many years at an undergraduate and postgraduate level. In addition to her current role at NOSA, she remains involved in lecturing at a business school on a part-time basis and is often invited to author study guides for academic institutions. Furthermore, she is an ad-hoc faculty member of the University of Pretoria.
She is generally viewed as a thought leader in terms of knowledge management and competitive intelligence in South Africa. This is evident from the numerous invitations she has received to present papers and workshops both locally and internationally. Deonie has been acknowledged by the international competitive and market intelligence company Digimind, as an expert in competitive intelligence (http://digimind.com/blog/competitive-intelligence/ci-in-mining-and-engineering-industries). Furthermore, she is also a prolific author on both subjects. Her list of publications include articles, study guides for universities and two books. She has also consulted to companies in the biotechnology, earthmoving equipment, mining, and telecommunications industries.
Deonie has a doctorate and two master’s degrees and has completed several diplomas. She has qualifications in Knowledge Management, Information Science, Information Technology, Strategic Analysis, Decision Making, Competitive Intelligence, Change Management and Human Resource Management. Currently, she is enrolled for an MSc. Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand.
